Introducing the Bintani New Kids On the Block - 2022 Edition

Every year Beervana showcases a beer wonderland of breweries from the big players to the small, local microbreweries, from the founders of “craft” to the Bintani new kids on the block

To help the newer and smaller breweries make their way into the New Zealand industry. Beervana welcomes them to the festival to introduce them to 16,000 beer drinkers by providing the stand, buying the beers to pop on tap and inviting the Bintani New Kids On the Block breweries to come and pour to the Good Beer drinking public of New Zealand.

This is an opportunity for new and smaller breweries that have opened in the previous year since the last Beervana and give them the opportunity to show off their beers and let beer drinkers.

In 2021 Bintani came on board to sponsor the New Kids stall. Bintani is a wholesale distributor proudly offering a wide range of the world’s highest quality ingredients for brewing, distilling, beverage, and food manufacturing.

Richard Robb, Sales Manager of Bintani New Zealand is ".. really looking forward to pouring beer from a few exciting new brewers that wouldn’t have been at Beervana this year, otherwise,”

Now let’s get about introducing you to Beervana’s Bintani New Kids On the Block for 2021!

Shortjaw Brewing

Who are you?

Shortjaw Brewing - a new team in an old Westport brewery

Where does the idea of creating the brewery come from?

The brewery was in liquidation, and we didn't want Westport to lose what is a 30 year old brewery in the middle of town. It's my hometown, and after a decade working in the Australian beer industry, we decided to give it a go.

Any notable achievements? Wanna share something you're proud of?

Honestly we are just proud to be open. We bought the brewery when we were in hard lockdown in Melbourne. Even getting documents signed to complete the purchase was a hurdle in itself. Then through quarantine, and relocating our lives to the West Coast... just opening the doors was an achievement in itself. We've since won a bronze at the Australian International Beer Awards, and a Silver at the NZ Beer Awards for the Kiwi Dark Lager.

Why are you excited to be part of Beervana?

We've been going to Beervana for years, and absolutely love every visit to Wellington. To be pouring a beer is special for us, because Wellington is a city that has played a big part in our love for beer.

Any hot news about the pours you'll be bringing to Beervana?

We'll be bringing our Kiwi Dark Lager - a beer designed with 30 year old lineage in the brewery. It's only 4%, but full of cocoa and coffee flavours from the malt. It's been described as an Espresso Martini in beer-form. We'll also have a limited amount of our taproom favourite Mild Ale. It's a 3% English Mild that sells out immediately in our taproom. The Beervana version will be hopped with Godiva hops from the UK.

Why should other breweries watch out for the new kids?

The hard work in the industry has already been done over the last decade with consumer acceptance and education. Now the new kids have nothing to lose when we enter the market. We can run our own race, in our own time.

Puhoi Beer

Who are you?

Heath Moy (Co-owner) and Scott Rice – (Founder and Co-owner) of Puhoi Beer. Heath grew up in Puhoi and I lived there for a period and now we both live in Orewa (just over the hill). We contract brew Puhoi Beer and we work with Hancocks Wines Spirits Beer Merchants as our exclusive distributor.

Where did the idea of creating the Puhoi Beer come from?

Lockdown idea in 2020, we thought a village with such a rich bohemian history deserved its own beer.

Any notable achievements? Wanna share something you're proud of?

Yes, getting a new beer brand off the ground in a very competitive craft beer market, moving from keg to cans in September 2021, signing on with Hancocks in December 2021, and our bronze medal wins at the NZ and Aussie Beer Awards.

Why are you excited to be part of Beervana?

Our first beer festival, so it’s chance to get our beer into the hands of beer lovers, to meet our customers, and have a heap of fun doing it.

Any hot news about the pours you'll be bringing to Beervana?

Our one and only, Bohemian Pilsner 4.6% ABV

Why should other breweries watch out for the new kids?

We are growing fast and have a great team behind us. The Puhoi brand has real equity, and we think that together with brewing NZ’s best tasting Czech Pilsner will see us become a NZ favourite.

Browns Bay Brewing Company

Who are you?

Browns Bay Brewing Company, from Browns Bay on the North Shore in Auckland.
  • Owners: George and Rachael Inta
  • Brewer: Andrew Ranum
We are brewing on the original Deep Creek brew kit in their old brewpub.
Deep Creek sold the brewpub in late 2019. We got a few months of normal operation before Covid brought us to a grinding halt. It's been pretty hard going ever since.

Where did the idea of creating the brewery come from?

The brewer, Andrew Ranum, is a beer man, through and through! A keen homebrewer, he has been working with beer for over 20 years. From tending to cask ales as a cellarman in the UK, to managing various craft beer bars in Auckland, to working as part of the 8 Wired brew team, and brewing at the Deep Creek brewpub.

Any notable achievements? Wanna share something you're proud of?

Our Nectaron Fresh Hop IPA this year was bangin! Best beer we've made. So far we have only been brewing for supply to the brewpub, but this brew sold out super fast. This year we will be starting to get kegs out the the rest of NZ.

Why are you excited to be part of Beervana?

We have attended Beervana for many years, as part of the team on the 8 Wired and Deep Creek brewery stands, and as punters. We have been talking about getting our beers here since we started Browns Bay Brewing.

Any hot news about the pours you'll be bringing to Beervana?

Our Double Goats Double IPA is a favourite at the brewpub. It's a classic West Coast style IIPA. What can we say? It rocks!
The Toffee Pop Imperial Porter has been brewed especially for Beervana. 8.5%, with molasses, jaggery sugar and caramelised lactose bringing sweetness and caramel flavour and organic cocoa nibs and vanilla ramping up the chocolate character. Chockie Bikkie in a glass!

Why should other breweries watch out for the new kids?

Anyone who gets into the industry at this time must be a bit crazy, or have an ace or two up their sleeve!

Badass Beverages

Who are you?

I’m Dave, one of the founders of Badass Beverages.  There are four of us Badasses, trying to bring some fun beer ideas to life as a side project to our day jobs.  We’re having a good time, learning heaps, getting a lot wrong and a few things right

Where did the idea of creating the brewery come from?

It happened gradually then suddenly.  I’d worked in the beer industry for many years in the past and loved it, and had a bunch of ideas I’d always wanted to have a go at.  The kind of thing you tell people you’re absolutely definitely going to do one day, and then at some point you’ve told enough people and sort of convinced yourself and some of those people that it’s a good idea, and next thing you know you’ve just ordered a bunch of cardboard boxes and hops.

Any notable achievements? Wanna share something you're proud of?

We were incredibly proud and excited to win the Wheat & Other Grain trophy at this year’s BGONZAs for our Hefe Metal hefeweizen.  We bloody love the beer and were optimistic that we might medal, but to take out the trophy was an amazing moment.  Massive kudos to Alex’s brilliant recipe and Skin at Craft Brewing Co our contract brewing partners.

Why are you excited to be part of Beervana?

I’ve enjoyed a fair few Beervanas in the past in various combos of business and pleasure, and the heady mix of excitement, education, and deliciousness is quite the combination.  This will be our festival debut as Badass, and we couldn’t think of a better place to get underway

Any hot news about the pours you'll be bringing to Beervana?

We’re bringing our trophy winner, Hefe Metal, plus Disko Inferno, our schwarzbier which won a silver medal at the awards.  We’re still super tiny and have pretty limited distribution, especially outside of Auckland where we’re based, so we’re very excited to pour our beers for a bigger audience.

Why should other breweries watch out for the new kids?

Because we’ve got The Right Stuff, and Step by Step we’re making our way.  (*overthinks mediocre dad joke, can’t think of anything better, then runs out of time and presses send on the email anyway)
